If you’re an NDIS participant, or you manage a plan for someone who is, you may have wondered whether recovery and rehabilitation equipment — like compression therapy systems, vibration therapy devices, or mobility supports — can be covered under your plan. The short answer is: sometimes, depending on your goals, your plan management type, and whether the item meets the NDIS “reasonable and necessary” criteria.

This guide breaks down how NDIS funding works for assistive technology and recovery equipment, what to check before you buy, and how MeWellness can help support your recovery and wellbeing goals.

How NDIS Funding for Equipment Generally Works

The NDIS doesn’t maintain a simple shopping list of “approved products.” Instead, funding for equipment falls under the Assistive Technology (AT) category of a participant’s plan, and whether an item is funded depends on a few factors:

Your plan management type. If you’re self-managed or plan-managed, you generally have more flexibility in choosing suppliers and products, as long as the purchase aligns with your plan’s stated goals and budget categories. Agency-managed funding usually requires purchases through registered providers.

The “reasonable and necessary” test. For NDIS to fund an item, it generally needs to relate to your disability, help you achieve your goals (such as improved mobility, independence, or pain management), represent value for money, and not be something more appropriately funded by another system (like Medicare for medical treatment).

Low-cost vs higher-cost AT. Lower-cost assistive technology (often items under a few thousand dollars) may be easier to purchase directly if it fits within your existing AT budget. Higher-cost items typically require a quote, a recommendation from an allied health professional (such as an OT or physiotherapist), and sometimes a formal plan review or AT assessment.

Products That May Align With NDIS Goals

While not every item is automatically NDIS-funded, several categories in our range are commonly considered as assistive technology or therapeutic supports when recommended by an allied health professional as part of a participant’s goals:

Air Relax recovery compression system

Mobility & Joint Supports

Braces, compression sleeves, and orthopaedic supports for ankles, knees, wrists, and backs can support participants managing chronic pain, joint instability, or post-injury recovery — often tied to goals around maintaining independence and physical function.

Vibration therapy pain relief device

Vibration & Drug-Free Pain Therapy

Devices like vibration therapy wraps and pain relief tools may be considered under therapeutic supports for participants whose plans include pain management or sensory regulation goals.

Breathing & Respiratory Support Tools

Breathing trainers can support participants with respiratory goals, particularly where an allied health professional has identified a benefit for lung capacity or breath control as part of a broader therapy plan.

Physiotherapy rehabilitation equipment

Recovery & Rehabilitation Tools

Equipment that supports a participant’s rehabilitation program — particularly where a physiotherapist has recommended it as part of an ongoing treatment plan — may be eligible depending on individual circumstances.

Steps to Take Before Purchasing

  1. Check your plan goals and AT budget. Review your NDIS plan to see what’s allocated under Core Supports (Consumables) or Capital Supports (Assistive Technology).
  2. Speak with your allied health provider. An OT, physiotherapist, or other relevant professional can assess whether a specific product supports your goals and provide a written recommendation — this is often essential for higher-cost items.
  3. Confirm with your plan manager or LAC. If you’re plan-managed, your plan manager can confirm whether a specific purchase fits your budget categories before you buy.
  4. Get a formal quote. For items that need pre-approval, a clear quote with product specifications makes the assessment process smoother.
